Richard Earl Bray (Dick) Obituary

Mesa, AZ - Richard "Dick" Earl Bray, 85, passed away peacefully in his home on March 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of those who cherished him.

Dick was born on May 1, 1940, in Big Stone City, South Dakota, the fifth child of Earl and Laura (Kargleder) Bray. Growing up in a large, close‑knit family shaped the steady, grounded nature that would define him throughout his life. He is preceded in death by his siblings Darold Bray, Rosella Deurloo, Donald Bray, and Marion Karr, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

A proud graduate of Milbank High School, Dick went on to attend South Dakota State University, where his years spent working on the family farm inspired his interest in plant sciences. His academic path eventually took him far from his South Dakota roots to the University of Arizona, where he completed his Masters in the field of plant genetics. Tucson became a turning point in his life—not only academically, but personally.

It was there, in 1969, that Dick met the love of his life, Patricia (Murphy) Bray, on a blind date that would change both of their lives. They married on September 5, 1970, in Aberdeen, Maryland, beginning a partnership marked by devotion, shared purpose, and a deep, abiding affection that carried them through more than five decades together.

Dick's greatest joy came from the family he and Patricia built. He is survived by his beloved wife Patricia and their children Scott (Jennifer), Erin (Carlos), and Kyle (Melanie). He took immense pride in his role as a grandfather, and his six grandchildren—Madilyn Bray (25), Gavin Bray (23), Isabel Rios Bray (16), Lucas Rios Bray (14), Olivia Bray (13), and Roman Bray (10)—brought him endless happiness. He never missed an important moment in his family's lives, always there to cheer them on at games, performances, and milestones. Even as his health declined, he remained their biggest supporter.

Throughout his life, Dick was known for his quiet integrity, intellectual curiosity, and unwavering commitment to those he loved. He approached every chapter with humility and purpose, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, loyalty, and gentle strength. He also never said no to a party. His family and friends will remember him for his thoughtful guidance, his steady presence, and the warmth he brought into every room.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
