Jewel Dolores Hoffmann Obituary
Scottsdale, AZ - Jewel Dolores Hunt Hoffmann, 92, recently passed away at home on May 17, 2026 surrounded by family members and close friends. Jewel D., as she was called by her southern relatives, was born Jan. 29, 1934 in LeCompte, LA to Everett Hunt and Eula Lee Fletcher.
Hoping to channel some of her abundant energy, her parents enrolled her in music and dance classes. These soon came in handy for when she often performed on stage at her uncle's movie theater. She even played a minor role in one of the Little Rascals films in the late 1930s. While still a young girl her father became very ill, dying when she was only 11 years old. Her mother was remarried to George C. Herbert, and the new family moved to his home town of Selinsgrove, PA.
There she stayed active in music, primarily through singing and playing the piano and organ for her church; she also was a baton twirler in high school. After graduation, Julie entered nursing school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she met her future husband, Dr. George L Hoffmann, Jr., MD. At that time, George was required to obtain permission to marry the young nurse from the matron of the school. After receiving her Registered Nurse's diploma, they married on Sept. 25, 1954 in Selinsgrove and settled in Cleveland, OH, where she obtained a bachelor's degree in nursing from Case Western Reserve University while George completed a surgical fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic.
Their daughter, Kathryn Lee, was born in 1957 at Cleveland Clinic, and the small family soon moved to Arizona the following summer. Julie assisted George in setting up his private surgical practice in Mesa, working in the new office. They built a home in northwest Mesa in time to welcome their son, Jon Hunt, in 1960 at the old Southside Hospital. Julie soon became active in the Women's Junior League and then in the county and state medical axillaries composed of doctors' wives; she would later go on to fill the presidents' positions for both groups.
She was also very involved in the family's church, St. Mark's Episcopal Church, founding its vacation Bible school. She participated in local Bible studies, and became active in the President's Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. Around the same time, the Hoffmanns built another home, this time on the edge of the mesa, just off North Mesa Drive. After George's retirement from the medical field in the early 1990s, the couple bought a home in Desert Highlands in northern Scottsdale. They had a very active social life between area functions and their membership in the Rolls Royce Owners' Club, embarking on several international trips with the latter group. They also enjoyed attending their new church home, Pinnacle Presbyterian Church.
After his death in 1997, Julie relocated a few miles away to the newly-built Vi at Silverstone residence, where she continued making many new close friends.
She is survived by her two children: Kathryn H. McCorkle and Jon Hunt Hoffmann, her five grandchildren, Alyssa M. (husband William) Ehrlich and Gavin S. (wife Nina) McCorkle, and Amy H. (husband Nick) Langley, Jeffrey Hunt Hoffmann, and Madison M. Hoffmann. She was also fortunate to be able to get to know and be delighted by her six great-grandchildren: Ellis George and Adair Caden Ehrlich, Graham Frederick and Hudson Everett McCorkle, and Emily Kristine and Taylor Leigh Langley.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Pinnacle Presbyterian Church, 25150 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale, AZ 85225. Internment and reception will follow.
